Backstage - Photos | Stories

Below you will find a selection of backstage meet & greet photos of the many artist I have met throughout the years. Working in the music business had its privileges. After 25 years I met some of the great musicians of my time for a brief moment which I acquired signatures and a photo from time to time.

Allman Brothers Band Butch Trucks

In 1991 I was hired to photograph all the members of the Allman Brothers Band for their US passports. Photos taken during the opening band. Here I am with drummer Butch Trucks moments after his passport photo was taken. I recall all the band members where in good spirits except Dickey Betts.

Bo Diddley

This photo taken in 1990 at Deep Ellum Live in Bo Diddley's dressing room. A select few were brought in one at a time to meet Mr. Diddley for signatures and a photo. He was humble, gracious and happy to meet his fans. It was quick and brief but a moment in time I will always remember. RIP Bo.

Charlie Sexton

Here is a shot of Charlie Sexton while on his 1991 tour with the Arc Angels. This was taken after show inside the venue for a meet & greet with all the band members. Charlie is one of the coolest musicians I have ever met. He was quite polite and genuinely glad to be meeting you.

Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton

Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section, Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton backstage in 1991 while on tour with the Arc Angels. I must say, for as popular as both these guys are they were very humble and available to take a photo. It was good to see both of them back on the road after just a short time of Stevie's tragic death.

Glenn Danzig

My second encounter with Glenn Danzig. Photo taken in 1991 backstage at the Arcadia Theater right after their set. Still sweating from his performance, Glenn was cool enough to invite me in his dressing room for a quick photo op. Trying to look cool myself, I gave my best metal face for the camera.

Eerie Von

Here I am with Eerie Von, bass player for Danzig. By the look on his face it seems that he didn't want his photo taken, but the feeling was quite opposite. I remember John Christ sitting reading a book in the corner. The band was in a good mood. They just played a sold out concert with Soundgarden opening the show.

Don Dokken

Here I am with Don Dokken in 1988. I was checking into the Four Seasons Hotel and the band were waiting in the lobby on their way to the show. Dokken were one of the bands that played at The Monsters of Rock. Don is very nice and always glad to sign and take a photo with anyone!

Derek St. Holmes

Ted Nugent fame singer songwriter Derek St. Holmes, shown here with me at the 2007 Dallas Guitar Show at the Market Hall. Derek was there with some friends and he stopped by my booth to look around. I didn't recognize him at first, until he mentioned he sang on Ted Nugent's first few records. Then it hit me! Great guy.

Ray Manzerek

Keyboardist and legend Ray Manzarek of The Doors. Photo taken in 2003 outside of the Wyndom Hotel in Arlington Texas. Ray being somewhat of a kidder after signing he asked "So, will these be on eBay tomorrow?" I said "No Way! I'm waiting until next week!" He then gave me a dirty look and got on the bus.

Robbie Kreiger

Guitarist Robbie Kreiger in 1995 with myself and my bartender buddy Craig at TREES. He played a 3 hour set on a Tuesday night. I ended up giving Robbie and his manager a ride back to their hotel. We drove by Dealey Plaza to view the 'X' on Elm Street where JFK was shot. Robbie freaked out! We then stopped at Burger King!

Ed Zeppelin

Yeah mon... Ed Zeppelin, bongo player for California band Dread Zeppelin shown here on Halloween night 1990 at the Metroplex Arena. This photo taken moments before the band took the stage to play for a sold out crowd. Their dressing room reeked of pot smoke, cheap wine and pure smelly funk!

Eric Johnson

Another Texas great under rated guitarist, Eric Johnson shown here backstage at the Bronco Bowl Arena in 1990. Eric is the nicest person you can meet. Easy going and very personable with all his fans. One of my first big photos published was his 'Guitar Transcriptions' book that came out in 1990.

Everclear singer Art Alexakis

This photo taken backstage at the Bomb Factory in 1998 with Everclear singer Art Alexakis. A down to earth guy, Art was hanging out with everyone and anyone who wanted to speak with him. I remember people walking around that were going to the show and didn't even recognize Art.

Mike Bordin

Photo taken in 1998 on the streets of Deep Ellum around 1:59 am. Looking for an open bar to catch a last minute drink, I spotted Mike Bordin drummer for Faith No More outside of TREES and grab a photo op with him. We then went inside TREES and had a shot. A big thanks to my bartender buddy Craig who worked at TREES for the free shots!

Tammie Downs of Faster Pussycat

California glam banger Taimme Downes of Faster Pussycat shown here in 1988 at Heavy Metal Records in Dallas. Looking through the poster rack while at the record store, Tammie was riding high on their first LP and a commercial hit song 'Babalyn On'. Although the high didn't last long it was cool to hang with Tammie at the time.

Fem2Fem

This crazy girl was one of the wild lesbians in the all female band Fem2Fem. Photo taken backstage in 1995 at Club Detour in Dallas. Soon after, she proceeded to show off her titties and demanded I take a photo of them. So I did! I remember her manager was not happy and kicked me out of their dressing room.

Gibby Hanes of the Butthole Surfers

Austin based punk rocker Gibby Hanes of the Butthole Surfers shown here with his dog 'Bugger' outside of Bill's records in Richardson Texas. One of the few time I met Gibby where he wasn't tripping on mushrooms!

Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden

British metal powerhouse, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden shown here in 1990 outside at Dallas City Limits club. This photo was taken very quick, seconds before Bruce jumped into his van. It was a hot summer night and even hotter inside the club and he was anxious to get back to the hotel.

Jesus and Mary Chain

I cannot say who these two guys are other than they are in Jesus and Mary Chain band. Even so, they were cool about signing my picture disc LP and posing for a quick photo. This picture taken backstage in 1990 at the Arcadia Theater. I remember Nine Inch Nails opened the show.

Jimmy Buffet

A rare moment of Jimmy Buffet smiling ear to ear. I say this because he is known to be an asshole off stage! This photo taken backstage in 1992 at the Starplex Amphitheater in Dallas.

Kenny Arron

Now this is a cool cat. Kenny Aaronson, bassist for Billy Idol. This photo taken in 1987 backstage at Reunion Arena. Kenny was surrounded by many girls, groupies, and was loving every minute of it! I managed to pull him away for a quick photo and quietly asking "Who are you F@#king tonight?" He just smiled.

King Diamond

Mr. Halloween himself, King Diamond seen here hanging out backstage at an 1992 Ozzy Osbourne show without makeup. I was hired to photograph Alice In Chains with some Sony big wigs who flew in to meet the band. One of the photos taken was used in the AIC box set.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Who are these boys? I'm not sure myself but I do know the guy on the right sang for Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the other played guitar on Kenny's his first LP. This photo taken in 1996 backstage at the Bronco Bowl Arena. I remember smoking some good weed with them that gave me the munchies! gotta love the free backstage food!

Little Ceaser

Here I am with members of a California band called Little Caesar. This photo taken in 1992 at the Basement for a meet & greet with the band for their debut release. I believe the guy on my right had a short part in Terminator 2 as the guy who got punched out by Arnold during the bar fight at the beginning of the movie.

Pepe and Paco Lopez of the Loco Gringos

Couple of local hero's, Pepe and Paco Lopez of the 'Loco Gringos'. The Gringos were one of a kind. This photo taken outside of On The Rocks in 1990. Sadly, Pepe Lopez, the guy to my right, was found dead of a heroin overdose a few years later in Austin Texas. Long Live Pepe Lopez! RIP Pepe.

Johnnie Van Zant

This photo taken backstage at the 1992 Farm Aid concert held at Texas Stadium. Heading to the stage to play their Lynyrd Skynyrd set, I manage to walk up to Johnnie Van Zant to take a quick photo. I believe he was saying "Hey man I have a show to do". We actually have a friend in comment. A guy known as Joe Blow! (wink)

James Hetfield

Backstage at Starplex with James Hetfield of Metallica in 1996. This is probably my 5th time to have met the band and you never know what mood James will be in. I remember backstage in 1992 James bitchin at me for taken a photo of Lars with a fan. Lars got a big laugh out of it, while James gave me the evil eye all night!

Lars Urich

This photo taken in 1996 as well and as always Lars Ulrich in a great mood. One thing I can say about Metallica, they do make time to spend with their fans after each show. This was in August and another hot Texas night The band hung around for over an hour.

Milli Vanilli

No Way!... MTV fame Milli Vanilli in 1990 outside of the Crescent Court Hotel in Dallas. I think the guys were dressed either for their show or a music video. I met them by accident while walking through the hotel. It was hard Not to spot them since they were somewhat popular at the time.

Michael Schenker

UFO MSG guitarist Michael Schenker shown here backstage in 1988 at the Arcadia Theater with my BMG record buddy Jeff. I remember Michael being pretty drunk, speaking German and making no sense what so ever! Still, there was free food and free beer so I wasn't complaining!

Pat Travers

Classic rocker Pat Travers backstage in 1994 at the Rodeo Club in Arlington Texas. This photo taken after the show and happy to say Pat was in a great mood considering there weren't many people at the club to see him play. Pat always puts on a great show!

New York punk rocker Johnny Ramone

New York punk rocker Johnny Ramone here in 1990 at the Fair Park Band Shell while on their summer tour 'Escape from New York'. Johnny collects signatures of criminals and death row inmates like; Charles Manson, Dillinger and Al Capone. Johnnie, soft spoken and very cool to his fans. RIP Johnny.

Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam

Backstage at the TNT Building in Oklahoma City with bassist Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam in 1993. I managed to get in with the band and was able to photograph three shows in a row. The band were selling out every show and were in a great mood as well, except Eddie Vedder who seemed bothered by all the fans.

Pearl Jam Stone Gossard

Here I am with guitarist Stone Gossard hanging out after the show in OKC 1993. I remember I was able to hang out on stage with a few selected guest while the band played. It was an awesome experience to see Pearl Jam play night after night. They were on fire selling out show after show in every city!

Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot

Metal Head Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot in 1995 after their set at Dallas City Limits. I was hired to take a photo of the band early on that day at Big State Records Distributors in Dallas and somehow I ended up chauffeuring the band all day to Z-Rock radio, dinner and then the show in my Toyota 4Runner! Rip Kevin.

Quiet Riot Frankie Banali,

Here I am with Frankie Banali, drummer for Quiet Riot in 1995. Frankie and I hit it right off the bat since we were both from New York and big Zeppelin fans. He asked me to be on stage during his drum solo to get some extreme close ups of him banging the skins with his hands just like John Bonham used to do.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Another wild night backstage with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1991. This photo taken at the Bronco Bowl Arena with drummer Chad and Christie. The Pepper's loved Dallas, or Texas period! They loved the fans and especially the girls. I got on their good side by turning the band on to rare concert bootleg videos!

Rick Derringer

In 1987 Rick Derringer was on tour as Cyndi Lauper's guitarist. This photo taken by their bus in Tyler Texas. I was always a big fan of Rick from his early days with Johnny Winter. He is one of the friendliest guys you can meet. Rick is now a born again Christian and is very easy going and very genuine!

Ricky Van Shelton

Country fame Ricky Van Shelton backstage at the Six Flags Amphitheater in 1992. This photo taken minutes before Ricky took the stage. I was invited for a quick meet & greet with him. What can you say about most country artist, they are all very down to earth people.

Steve Jones

A very confused Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols here in 1996 wondering why I was having him sign a broken guitar! Well, the guitar wasn't broken, it just had the neck off. Being a big Pistols fans, I tracked them down at the Crescent Court Hotel and when I walked in the lobby there was Steve and drummer Paul Cook.

Smash Gladys

Sleazy Sally of punk metal band Smash Gladys, one of the raunchiest singers to come out of the 80s. This photo taken after their show at On The Rocks in 1988. I believed she grabbed my buttocks while taken this photo, not that I cared but it did surprise me for a second.

Soundgarden

This photo taken backstage at Deep Ellum Live in Dallas with Kim and Chris Cornell of Soundgarden in 1989. With the 'Grunge' sound coming of age, seeing Soundgarden for the first time was mind blowing! One of the most intense concert I ever photographed. I worrying when Kim smashed his guitar at the end of the show thinking I might get hit.

Steve Hackett

Backstage at the Bronco Bowl Arena, GTR guitarist Steve Hackett shown here in 1984 after their show. Quiet and laid back, Steve is a very underrated guitarist except to the ones who know him and his music.

Jimi Jamison

Hired to shoot a private record release party for BMG recording artist, Jimi Jamison lead singer of Survivor shown here in 1990. The record was a flop! No matter, it was a paying gig for me!

Tommy Aldridge

Veteran drummer Tommy Aldridge backstage in 1987 while on tour with Whitesnake. Tommy also played with Pat Travers in 1976 and was with Ozzy Osbourne on the Blizzard of Oz LP in 1981. He is also a native Texan, very humble and very considerate with his fans.

Tracy Guns

Hey poser! That would be David Coverdale in 1987 backstage at Reunion Arena. No matter what they say about David, he is a class act! The best thing about that night was getting to see his girl Tawnie... what an ass on her! Wish I had a photo with her, or at least that great ass of hers!

Alex Van Halen

Powerhouse drummer Alex Van Halen in 1988 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Irving Texas. As the headliners for The Monsters of Rock concert, Van Halen arrived just in time to check in, then leave for the show. Alex and Eddie always took the time to stop and sign autographs.

Vivian Campbell

Backstage with Vivian Campbell in 1985 at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Vivian was on tour with Dio but left the band soon after to do his solo project, then joined Def Leppard after Steve Clark died from alcohol poisoning. Vivian was cool but he was not happy with the Dallas audience. Said they didn't Rock Hard like Houston or San Antonio.

Jani Lane

Sitting outside of On The Rocks, Janie Lane of Warrant seen here in 1990. I remember giving Janie and his girl, the hot chick from the Cherry Pie video a ride back to their hotel. He asked me to drive thru Taco Cabana first for some late night munchies! As you can see I was lit myself.

J

White Zombie guitarist J backstage in 1991 at the Fair Park Band Shell in Dallas. The show was out of control and had to be stop due to the barricade breaking. WZ were getting big with their LP getting lots of air play. I remember seeing Al Jurgensen of Ministry hanging with bassist Sean backstage. Al is one strange dude!

David Coverdale

Now here's a wild man, L.A. Guns guitarist Tracy Guns in 1992 backstage at Dallas City Limits. No matter where he is, Tracy is always partying down. An overall great guy and big time pot smoker.

Zakk Wylde

Zakk Wylde hanging out here in 1995. This photo was taken after his show at TREES where Zakk hung around for over two hours signing and drinking with his fans. Zakk will stay all night if the drinks keep coming. I remember the club workers wanting him to leave so they could close up early. No luck. Zakk stayed until 2 am.
